WIN News approached us to do a story on Zea Relief and Tasmanian Kunzea Oil
For the thousands of Queenslanders who suffer from aches and pains finding relief is a constant challenge, but some say they are getting their lives back on track with the help of a natural plant oil.
Brisbane grandmother Julie Sims says she has been crippled by arthritis since suffering a nasty fall 8 years ago:
"I've had a total hip replacement, and have been advised that I do need a right knee replacement" - Julie Sims, Arthritis Sufferer
The pain became so bad, she struggled with household chores. She tried many treatments before discovering Kunzea Oil, which she claims helped her ease some of her pain:
"Within 3-4 weeks I probably had a 60% improvement"
The oil is derived from the Tasmanian Kunzea ambigua plant. Its antioxidant properties recognised by chance when a local farmer noticed the bush stopped his wire fence rusting. Antioxidants can help reduce inflammation.
The essential oil is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for the temporary relief of aches and pains. Now, in a Broadbeach Compounding Pharmacy, it's being turned into a cream:
"It is one of those creams we can recommend as a natural alternative" - Jack Hammond, Pharmacist
"I'm getting amazing results with clients with rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, sciatic pain, nerve pain" - Michelle Brass, Naturopath
Naturopath Michelle Brass is behind the cream and says she uses it as part of massage therapy at her Gold Coast clinic. Lyle Fielmich is one client who claims to have found relief:
"It has significantly improved my range of movement" - Lyle Fielmich, Pain Sufferer
The potential applications of Kunzea Oil are being considered here and overseas.
An anti-fungal hoof treatment for horses has been developed through research at the University of Tasmania. Kunzea Oil's anti-inflammatory properties are also being investigated for the treatment of diseases, such as Chrohn's.
Julie claimed it has helped her live a relatively normal life:
"To get my life back, so to speak, was just marvellous"
